FAQ
What is Notely?
Notely is a web application designed by a student for students in order to aid organisation and note taking during school. Unlike other web applications such as the google office suite it is specifically designed for students and the idea of note taking during lectures.
What can I do with Notely?
Notely isn't really finished yet, so I'm still working to add new features and improving old ones. At present it is possible to create lecture notes, keep track of homework/tasks, keep a to-do list, manage contacts around university, upload media and keep and online calendar.
How do I write notes?
To begin writing a lecture you must first have registered at least one school course. Once you have registered a course simply add a lecture from the Notes page. From here you can begin to write out your notes. By default note taking uses some nifty software (TinyMCE) to re-create the familiar and much loved Microsoft Word like interface through which you can add pictures, links, formatting etc to your notes.
I want to write simpler notes! How!?
If however you would prefer not to use the "Word" style interface you may use (faux) BBCODE styling by changing your settings. Currently supported tags are, [h1], [h2], [b], [u], [i], [img], [url], [tex]. The [tex] command is unique to Notely and allows users to input LaTeX commands that can write out complex formulae and expressions as images; clearly this can be most useful for scientific note taking and more information can be found at LaTeX.
How can I add pictures, equations and links to my notes?
All links and pictures you have stored on your Notely account are available to you directly from the Word-like toolbar. Just click the link or picture button to add them to your notes.
To add equations you can use the [tex] command. Simply click the equation button to the far left of the toolbar and add your equation. Using LaTeX commands you can write out complex formulae and expressions easily. For more information or help check out Tom's Mini LaTeX Tutorial or LaTeX homepage.
I'm using Firefox how can I copy/paste notes?
As a security feature in FF we're not allowed access to the clipboard. To get around this close FF and navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\user_pref("capability.policy.policynames", "allowclipboard");
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites", "http://www.mozilla.org");
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.cutcopy", "allAccess");
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.paste", "allAccess"); save and restart FF and you're up and running.
Can I get Notely on my phone?
In keeping with the Notely philosophy I've created a stripped-down version of Notely. You can access Notely Mobile at http://mobile.notely.net. You will notice some functionality is missing; this is done to keep costs to a minimum as in most countries mobile web is pretty f-ing expensive. If you would like to use the full site on your mobile and have really deep pockets you should just head to Notely Classic.
Is there a facebook application?
Notely is all about organising your school/uni/college life so why not integrate it with the best social networking site around, Facebook. There is a Notely facebook application that can be found at Notely Facebook Application. Using this application you can get your To-Do list, Homework planner, Events and more on Facebook. You can even choose to share some of this information publicly on your profile.
How do I get my token for RSS?
If you want to begin using the many Notely RSS features such as Feeds Notely Netvibes Ecosystem you will need to get your unique token. You can find this token by clicking any RSS feed indicator and copying and pasting the 10 digit within the url. Should you need further help feel free to contact me and I will tell you your code.
Is there a Dashboard Widget (etc)?
Notely uses the trendy Netvibes API to access information from outside of Notely. Get the Notely Netvibes Ecosystem here and add it to your google homepage, netvibes page or your OS X dashboard via the Netvibes UWA Dashboard Widget. Netvibes also has a Opera Widget here
What are Notely friends and what can I do with them?
Ever miss a lecture? Never again! By adding your classmates to your friends list you can share notes with each other so you'll never be left behind again. You can add friends by searching or through the Facebook friend importer. To add friends via the Facebook friends importer simply login to Facebook and a list of all your Facebook friends will be made, Notely will then check to see if they are on Notely. If your friend is already registered you may then add them to your friends, if they are not you may invite them to Notely.
How can I export notes?
You notes are your own; do with them as you want! You can export them with one click to various formats such as PDF, DOC or TXT. I can't really think of any other useful formats, hell TXT was pushing it a bit.
What else can I do with my data?
Most features of Notely have RSS integration; just look for the RSS icon (in the address bar in safari/firefox). You can access your RSS feed from any news reader all you need is an internet connection. You can also download the Notely dashboard widget that will be finished soon; this will allow Notely users who own an Apple running dashboard to get data on their desktops.
What can I upload to Notely?
One of Notely's key features is media upload so you can add images and such to your notes. Notely currently supports a wide range of file formats (images, zip, html, video, audio, documents) basically anything non-malicious. You can then embed image files in your lectures or link to movie/audio files.
What do I need to run Notely?
Notely requires nothing more than a modern browser and an internet connection. It was written for speed, ease of use, minimum clutter and maximum efficiency. In other words Notely can run on pretty much anything! Although it would probably be best to be running it on some sort of widescreen laptop to take advantage of the extra space.
Is my data safe?
Notely uses a secure MySQL database that is backed up hourly. Having said this Notely is a web app and as such it is possible some data may go missing due to a glitch, however this is very unlikely.
Is my data private?
Currently only you may see your data (unless you share it with a friend) and as such they are secure from persons who do not know your Login/Password. For this reason you should pick a secure password that is not guess-able (steer clear of 1234, qwerty, etc).
How Much Data Can I Upload?
Notely's Upload area is currently unlimited, however we may soon begin to regret the financial implications of this decision. So at present we ask you to respect our fair usage policy and upload only the files you need to.
Can I remove adverts from Notely?
Yes! Just hit the donate link in the footer and donate $5 or more. Once you have donated you will be redirected back to Notely. From this page you can choose which account to remove adverts from.
How can I remove my account?
So you want to leave Notely? Fair enough, just head over here and let me know. You account will be deleted within 24 hrs of your request.
I'm a developer, what have you got for me?
Currently there is an API although it is still a work in progress. It's pretty comprehensive and allows you to retrieve pretty much all the possible data you could want. You will need to contact me to get access to the API, you can contact me here and you can find more info about the API here
What Browser Should I Use?
While Notely is designed to work for all modern browsers I would recommend Firefox. If you want to support Notely by downloading Firefox please use this link to download Firefox.
