Google lags behind

Google Equation Editor

Google Equation Editor

A new post from TechCrunch this morning notes that Google is targeting students more aggressively than ever and even recently added a site to recruit schools up to the Google way of thinking. This is all great, in my opinion, anything which gets schools more interactive and technologically switched on is going to benefit kids hugely in the long run. But what Google is lacking is the agility and frame of mind to actually produce a product that works for students.

Google is simply adding some marketing and buzz (and a big name!) to a pre-existing product and calling it a solution for schools. This is shown more than ever by their latest feature push to Google docs; they’ve added an equation editor! Woop-de-doo. Notely has had an equation editor (albeit perhaps a little less eye-pleasing) for years. And what’s more they work in exactly the same way, wrapping the LaTeX language up in  GUI…hmm.
